Understanding Adjusted Body Weight:

This is a vital calculation that is used in the medical field to estimate the overall health condition of a patient. It helps to estimate the correct dosage of medicines for obese patients.

BMI (Body Mass Index) is widely used to measure obesity in patients as shown in the following table:

Category BMI
Underweight Below 18.5 kg/m
Normal 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m
Overweight 25.0 to 29.9 kg/m
Obese – Class I 30.0 to 34.9 kg/m
Obese – Class II 35.0 to 39.9 kg/m
Extreme Obesity (Class III) Above 40 kg/m

When To Use Adjusted Body Weight?

ABW is widely used for overweight or obese patients. It tells about the exact nutritional needs of the patient.

Therefore, it is used when doctors or dietitians have to know the nutritional needs of the body, suggest the dosage of a medicine, or have to create a diet plan for the patient who have gained weight

Adjusted Body Weight Formula:

Have a look at the following Adjusted Body Weight Equation:

ABW = IBW + 0.4 (actual weight – IBW)

Males Ideal Body Weight: IBW = 50 kg + 2.3 kg for each inch over 5 feet

Female Ideal Body Weight: IBW = 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg for each inch over 5 feet

Where

  • IBW represents the ideal body weight
  • AW is the actual body weight

What Is The Ideal Body Weight Percentage?

In the following table, we have provided the ideal body weight values for both genders.

How To Calculate Adjusted Body Weight?

Follow the below-mentioned steps to calculate ABW manually:

  • First of all, measure your “height” in inches or centimeters
  • Determine your “actual weight”
  • Find out the “ideal body weight” with the help of the above-written IBW formulas for males and females
  • Now put all of these values in the “ABW formula” and get the ABW

If you want to save time, then simply get the help of an online adjusted body weight calculator and perform the whole adjusted body weight calculation swiftly.

Example:

Let’s suppose the ideal body weight of a male who is 64 inches tall is 80 Kg. If he is obese (> IBW + 30 %), how to calculate ABW?

Solution:

Given that:

Actual Body Weight = 80 Kg

Height = 64

Now calculate male IBW:

IBW = 50 kg + 2.3 kg for each inch over 5 feet

For finding out the difference = 64 – 60 = 4

IBW = 50 kg + 2.3 x each inch over 60

IBW = 59.2

Now put the values in the ABW Formula:

ABW = IBW + 0.4 (actual weight – IBW)

ABW = 59.2 + 0.4 (80 – 59.2)

ABW = 59.2 + 0.4( 20.8)

ABW = 59.2 + 8.32

ABW = 67.52
