An online Z score calculator helps you to find the standardized Z score for any dataset in the normal distribution. Also, our z-score calculator allows you to calculate the z value from the following different input parameters:

  • From Data point
  • From sample mean & size
  • From Data sample
  • From p-value

Keep reading to exactly know about the definition, formulas, z table, how to calculate z score and much more.

What is Z score?

The z-score also known as the standard score, normal score or z value used to describe the normal distribution of the raw data. The Z score describes how many standard deviations of data are away from the mean. Z score may be positive or negative. The score above the average mean is represented by the positive Z score value while the score below the average mean is represented by negative Z score value. If the Z score value is zero, then it will be equal to the average mean. For example: if the z value is +2, it means that two standard deviations are above the mean.

What is Z score formula:

The Z score can be calculated by taking the difference between the raw data and population mean divided by the standard deviation of the data. It is given as:

z = x – µ / σ

Where,

x is the raw data

µ is the population mean

σ is the standard deviation of the data

When the population mean is known, the score can be calculated by the following formula:

z = Ẋ – µ / σ /√n

Where,

Ẋ is the population mean of the data points

n is the sample size

Z-Score Table:

The table also known as standard normal table or unit normal table, which consists of standard value from which you determine the probability of the following statistics:

Get the z value statistic by using the calculator and find it in the given z table.

Z scores and Standard Deviations:

As the Z score is strongly related to the standard deviation of the population data. Technically, the z value or Z score is the number of standard deviations from the mean value. For example:

A z score of -3.1 is -3.8 standard deviations below the mean.

A z score of 4 is 4 standard deviations above the mean.

The standardized value (Z score) determines where the score lies on the normal distribution curve.

How is Z score used in real life?

This value is helpful in determining the answer “how the score of 2 means higher than mean”. At the centre of curve, the score is 0 & the values that are right to the mean are positive and which are left is negative. The table helps you to determine what percentage of population is below or high to the mean.

 How to Find Z Score Manually (Step-by-Step):

Calculating Z score value becomes very easy with this online Z score calculator. The calculator uses the z score equation for the z score calculations from different methods. Here we have an example to clear the concept:

Swipe on!

Example:

The dataset having the mean of 3 and the standard deviation of 2. What is the z score of data set of 5 numbers?

Solution:

The formula is:

z = x – µ / σ

Here,

x = 9

µ = 4

σ = 2

So,

z = 9 – 4 / 2

z = 5 / 2

z = 2.5

You find the score of z value is 2.5! You can calculate it from the different input parameters accurately with detailed outcomes with graph.

How to Use Z Score Calculator:
